First Meeting of the Year: September 9th at 7PM SO285

SOWSA, your school of Social Work Student Association, would like to remind you about their upcoming meeting on Thursday September 9th at 7PM in room SO285 (Boca Campus). The agenda includes a discussion of this years strategic goals and objectives, committee sign ups, and a guest speaker. Stacy Bennett, a graduate of the FAU Social Work program and Senior Director of Residential Services at Broward House, will discuss "The Importance of Administrative Roles and Building a Culture at Social Service Agencies."

Please come to the meeting - bring your ideas, and get involved! If you are not already a member, you can fill out a membership form and turn it in at the meeting. For additional information on SOWSA, please see the September announcement below.

A Message from the 2010-2011 SOWSA Officers:
Welcome returning students and new students back to school!

SOWSA is the School of Social Work Student Association. We are a student organization that is dedicated to providing support, guidance, linkage and advocacy for social work students and to our community. As a member, you can make a difference, make your voice heard, network with students and community organizations, help shape the scope and
direction of the organization by participating in our planning committees, and plan and participate in social events and community service events that will be planned in support of our mission:

Mission Statement
SOWSA is dedicated to:

1. Furthering academic excellence within the BSW and MSW program of the FAU School of Social Work,
2. Giving social support to the undergraduate and graduate social work student body,
3. Promoting the NASW Code of Ethics by example,
4. Increasing the understanding of the Social Work profession as well as promoting a positive image of Social Work as a profession, and
5. Providing members with a forum to foster advocacy for social change at university and community levels.

We want to invite you to be a part of the organization and ask you to bring some of your own ideas to help drive SOWSA’s strategic plan for the 2010-2011 school year including these initiatives:

Support our objective of “INCLUSION” by achieving record membership enrollment and participation of all BSW and MSW Students.   
  
Plan and execute events in support of our mission including: professional workshops, movie nights, socials, mixers, community service events, volunteer events, and fundraising events.    

Provide community awareness throughout the month of March by hosting several events to promote National Social Work Month.     

Bring social service agency representatives to campus for “Career Day” to promote available jobs and discuss career opportunities for upcoming Social Work graduates.   
  
Provide all social work students with a peer support and mentoring program.
